In recent years, the concept of FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) has gained significant traction, captivating the minds of many individuals seeking financial freedom and early retirement. The FIRE subreddit now has 2.2 million subscribers. Many changed their lifestyles and went into hyper saving mode, fixated on retiring before 35 or 40 or whatever age they had set for themselves.

Justin McCurry, who retired from engineering at age 33 (dreamy) and author of the Root of Good blog wrote:

Financial independence is well within reach of an average college graduate… If you’re only making double the minimum wage, it is a lot harder. But for the vast majority of college grads it is in within reach, even for people who earn less than $100,000.

It was their way out of the rat race and out of a job that they did not particularly feel too passionate about. It was also a dream to be able to retire so early and have the luxury of time to do whatever they so fancy.

While the idea of attaining financial independence and retiring early is enticing, and trust me, I am sold on the idea, it might be that the relentless pursuit of these goals may lead to a life devoid of spontaneity, joy, and present-moment fulfilment. I find myself hesitating when friends ask me out for dinners or holidays.
